: Fair enough. The name is used in an old ecclesiastical document from St David's Cathedral, I thought I had a photocopy of the relevant part but have mislaid it, it's a mediaeval list of churches and clergy. It's also used by Nennius somewhere ('Life of Merlin' I think), though I haven't looked that up. It seems it was the name of the town before it fell to the Saxons at the Battle of Dyrham and no doubt continued in use on the western side of the Severn for some time afterwards.
