English: Cawg Caergwrle ( Caergwrle Bowl ) Perhaps the most extraordinary piece of gold work from Wales is known as the Caergwrle Bowl. It may be 12-11th century BC date or later. The 'bowl' is made of shale with a design deeply cut into it. Originally all elements in the design were filled with tin over which was placed decorated gold foil. The decoration has been interpreted as forming the gunwales, oars and keel of a boat with waves running along its hull. This beautiful gold-foil decorated shale bowl (c.18cm across the rim), found in a bog at the foot of Caergwrle Castle Hill appears to be a rare representation of a prehistoric boat. Now you will find the Caergwrle Bowl in a museum in Cardiff.
