English: Chirk Castle One of a chain of late 13th century border castles built to maintain the Welsh conquests of Edward I. Built by Roger Mortimer in the contemporary style of royal castles (eg Beaumaris) and the only border castle to have been continuously occupied. The Elizabethan merchant adventurer Thomas Myddelton bought it in 1595 and his family still live there. Managed by the National Trust (I thought this picture was more mellow than that on the NT web site).
