Im hinteren Schild steht das Richtschwert für die Stadtheiligen Cosmas und Damian, die mit diesem Zeremonialschwert hingerichtet worden sein sollen. Die Fürstenkrone bezieht sich auf das frühere Fürstentum Essen. English: The arms were officially granted in 1887. The arms of Essen are unique, as they show two shields under a single crown. The eagle symbolises, that Essen was an imperial City. The sword stands for the patron saints Cosmas and Damian, who were executed by a sword. The crown is a symbol for the former principalty of Essen. |
