Hygrocybe olivaceonigra (P.D. Orton) M.M. Moser Image location: Bon Tempe Reservoir, Marin Co., California, USA Single fruit-body growing on the ground in mixed woods, with Redwood nearest. Cap 6.6 cm across. Cap and stipe viscid and all parts bruising/turning blackish. Spore print white but skimpy. Spores ~ 9.2-12.0 X 5.9-7.2(7.9) microns. Q(range) = 1.43-1.66 A little larger and the spores wider than the description in Largent’s monograph but not sure how many collections he studied or what else to call it. Recognized by sight: Correct spelling. Based on microscopic features: The spores you measured are significantly wider than listed in the original species description, which says 9 – 12.5 × 4.5 – 5.5.
