English: Memorial to the '7 Men of Knoydart' In 1948 servicemen returning from WWII staked out claims to land on the Knoydart Estate which they intended to farm. The highly unpopular landowner, Lord Brocket, who had been a personal friend of Hitler and had entertained the German Ambassador on the estate, took them to court and they were imprisoned. Hamish Henderson, author & folklorist, wrote a song highly scathing of Brocket, 'The 7 Men of Knoydart'.An allusion to the 7 men of Moidart who accompanied Bonnie Prince Charlie. There were actually 8. I was privileged to meet the last of the 'Men', Archie MacDougall & it was like chatting to a survivor of the '45. Sadly all left the estate and are now dead. |
