I have written this draft policy in view of an observation at Wicipedia:Tudalennau amheus that some content has been copied from the webpage of Shelter Cymru.

I do believe that where content is copied from another website, we really do need to make completely sure that the owners of that site have given permission for the content to be used.

However, I got my fingers burned on this issue before, regarding a page about an organisation, that I won't name but some may remember. The text was copied from their website, and so I queried whether there was permission to use it. I received an email response claiming to be from the society's secretary, but it was sent from an email address which was neither in their registered domain nor listed in the contacts on their website. It was in fact genuine, but in order to make sure I forwarded it to their official address as listed on their website, with a brief but polite request for them just to confirm that it was indeed from them. In reply I got back a strongly worded objection to my request for confirmation, which ended: "nid oes amser gyda fi i chwarae plant fel hyn".

In view of this, I think we need a standard policy which will help protect the project against possible copyright claims in these cases, but which by being standard policy will help individuals not to feel that they are being singled out for suspicion.

Dear Alan012, Such a rude response would have made me very doubtful as to whether that organisation deserved an article. I admire your restraint. Personally I've always felt that any organisation will be so pleased to have a wikipedia article about them that they won't be too bothered about where the information is copied from as long as it's accurate.
