He continued as a medical practitioner until 1836, although he had been working as a clerk for the Hobart Town Surveyor's Department between 1834 and 1837. Between 1837 and 1847 he became the chief reporter of ''[[The Colonial Times]]'' newspaper. After a visit to Britain between 1847 and 1848 he returned to Tasmania working again as a doctor for a while.
