Ganed Kubrick yn Manhattan; roedd ei dad, Jacques Kubrick, yn feddyg. Nid oedd Stanley yn ddisgybl disglair yn yr ysgol, ond datblygodd ddiddordeb mewn fforograffiaeth, gan weithio fel ffortograffydd ar ei liwt ei hun am gyfnod cyn cael swydd ar gylchgrawn Look. Dechreuoodd wneud ffilmiau dogfen byr yn 1951 gyda Day of the Fight. Ei ffilm fawr gyntaf oedd Fear and Desire (1953).
