Born in number 7 Moreton Place, [[Pimlico]], [[London]], only son of Welsh parents; his father, William Hughes, of [[Holyhead | Holyhead]] and mother of Jane [[ Llansantffraid-ym-Mechain | Llansantffraid-ym-Mechain]] [[Powys]]. After the death of his mother in a train accident in [[Glastonbury]] on 28 May 1869, when he was seven years old, lived with her unmarried aunt Mary Hughes, sister of his father, [[Llandudno]]. He emigrated to Australia in October [[1884]]. After some work as a cook and a laborer, he opened a shop and has been actively involved with trade unions. He arrived in [[Sydney]] in 1886 where he lived with his landlord's daughter, Elizabeth Cutts.

In 1901 he was elected to Parliament for the constituency Labour Party in Western Sydney. In this period, he studied law and was made a barrister in 1903. His wife died in 1906, his eldest daughter Ethel (born 1889) and nurtured his five younger children, in Sydney: William (1891), Lily (1893), Dolly (1895), Ernest (1897) and Charles (1899 ). He became Prime Minister in October 1915, the center of [[World War]]. There was a split squad of the Labour Party, and Hughes and his supporters formed his own party, the Nationalist Party, won election [[1917]], with Hughes remains Prime Minister. In [[1919]] represented Australia in the negotiations that led to the [[Treaty of Versailles | Treaty of Versailles]]; said to be conversational Gymraeg with [[David Lloyd George]].
