- Hello. Does anyone know when the name Abertawe started being used for Swansea and for what purpose it was introduced? A reply in English would be greatly appreciated. Thanks - Steve
- I'm afraid I don't know but what about a spirited guess? I suppose the name Abertawe (mouth of the river Tawe) is older than the name Swansea, people spoke Welsh in the area before the Vikings came (according to it was them who came up with the name)... Anybody around with any knowledge about this? --Okapi 13:33, 4 Tach 2004 (UTC)
- Thanks for your response. Actually, I doubt that is the case as there is no evidence of a settlement at the mouth of the Tawe before the Vikings, and also I can find no mention of the name Abertawe in early literature - although I guess it is possible - Steve
- Hmm... sorry, I can't really help any further... But maybe somebody who know more will come across your question later :-) --Okapi 15:04, 4 Tach 2004 (UTC)
