llofnod

Fe ddaeth o deulu o uchelwyr Seisnig, ond ganwyd ef yng Nghymru ym mhentref Tryleg, Sir Fynwy, ac yng Nghymru hefyd y bu farw, ym Mhlas Penrhyn, Penrhyndeudraeth (yn yr hen Sir Feirionnydd).

Yn ogystal a'i waith academaidd, roedd yn ymgyrchu'n gyhoeddus ar sawl pwnc. Roedd yn sosialydd ac yn heddychwr, ac fe gyhoeddai safbwynt rhyddfrydol radicalaidd.

Cyfnod ym Mhenryndeudraeth golygu

Yn y 1960au, ymsefydlodd ym Mhlas Penrhyn, Penrhyndeudraeth, yn rhannol oherwydd ei edmygedd o'r bardd Percy Bysshe Shelley a fu'n aros yn yr un ardal.[3] Roedd yn rhentu (nid yn berchen ar) y Plas yn ogystal â fflat yn Chelsea,[4] yn unol â'i daliadau asgell chwith. Ymgyrchu dros heddwch oedd ei brif weithgarwch yn ei gyfnod yno, gan gynnwys ei waith dros y Russel Peace foundation a sefydlodd ym 1962.[5] Ralph Schoeneman oedd ei ysgrifennydd hyd fis Rhagfyr 1969; gaeth ei ymddiswyddo gan fod ei weithgarwch yn or-radicalaidd hyd yn llygaid Russell. Ar 24 Hydref 1962, wrth i'r newyddiadurwr Glyn Russell Owen ymweld â Russell ym Mhlas Penrhyn, daeth newyddion fod argyfwng taflegrau Ciwba yn dechrau dadmer, gan beri i Russell a Schoeneman, a fu'n ymgyrchu'n galed am ddatrysiad heddychlon i'r sefyllfa, ddawnsio'n wyllt am rai munudau.[6] Bu farw o'r ffliw ar 2 Chwefror 1970 ym mhlas Penrhyn. Cafodd ei amlosgi ym Mae Colwyn, heb na seremoni crefyddol na blodau,[7] yn unol â'i daliadau anffyddiol. Gwasgarwyd ei weddillion ar fynydd yng Nghymru.
