BBC's on-hover translation toolGolygu

Has anyone investigated getting the BBC's new word-by-word translation tool enabled on Wicipedia? I think it'd be really great for learners - I'm trying to get the Clwb Malu Cachu list ppl to come to Wicipedia, and having this sort of tool working here would be a boon to learners everywhere (including me!). Jimmy Wales is pretty interested in the idea, but was just wondering if anyone here has already discussed it.

Problem on Hafan...Golygu

Problem on Hafan...Golygu

It looks alright now. Perhaps the server threw a wobbly -- I was just reloading Hafan now, and the bullet points were showing some sort of elongated character until the whole page had loaded. The server's been dreadfully slow today on all the Wikipedia's I'm on, so I guess it's time for the Foundation to spend some more money again! If it happens again, try putting __DIMTAFLENCYNNWYS__ near the top of the page. -- Arwel 19:56, 30 Tach 2004 (UTC)
I saw a connection to Prif tudalen instead of Hafan on the page I was editing. But there seems to be no such page. I wondered if someone was tampering -- has "Hafan" ever been called "Prif tudalen" in the past? Deb 20:08, 30 Tach 2004 (UTC)
I don't think so. It was "Main Page" when the software was first set up in July last year, but it got moved to Hafan quite quickly. What page were you editing? -- Arwel 23:32, 30 Tach 2004 (UTC)

Y gwyddoniadur rhad????Golygu

I just noticed that it now says y gwyddoniadur rhad above the articles, while it still is y gwyddoniadur rhydd below the logo. I wonder if rhad has the same negative connotations about quality as cheap does in English, if it does I would opt for a change! --Okapi 04:55, 29 Rhag 2004 (UTC)

English is ambiguous here. I've always taken it in a "free as in freedom" context rather than any reference to price. This same semantical issue occurs in the free software movement where they stress that free refers to free to be modified in the context of loose or open, not as in "of zero price". The alternative term open now actually being preferred in software circles to disambiguate the context clearly. Wouldn't something like Wicipedia, y gwyddoniadur agored dismabiguate the semantics while stressing the major difference of Wikipedia to any other encyclopedia? International Writing ContestGolygu

Hello everybody,

In Berlin at Dezember 2004 there was the critique that there is not enough connection in the work of all the different Wikipedias in their different languages. I think, that an internationally linked writing contest should be one possible chance to cooperate and work together. At March 1st there will be the start of the second writing contest in the german Wikipedia so I thought, we can start it as an international project. There had bee contests in the Wikipedia of the Netherlands nl:Wikipedia:Schrijfwedstrijd, the german Wikipedia de:Wikipedia:Schreibwettbewerb and the english one en:Wikipedia:Danny's contest and as far as I could see it, it worked really good.

The link from Canol Oesoedd as "Canol Oesoedd <nowiki>diweddar yng Nghymru</nowiki>" does seem to work - I've just created the article with "test" in it if you want to edit it. Unfortunately even if we had a fix for the bug (I think it's in the LanguageCy.php file), I have my doubts we'd get any action out of the developers for quite a long time -- I've just seen a shirty comment from one of them on one of the mailing lists to the people who want an Ossetian Wikipedia about lack of time and resources (not helped by developer Tim Starling taking a (temporary, I hope) break from Wikipedia because it was impinging too much on his real life). -- Arwel 20:56, 2 Chwe 2005 (UTC)
Hmmm, yes and no... The original article did not link, so I copied the contents and pasted them to your new link with the proper explanation on Sgwrs. At least the article is not orphaned any longer, but we will have to remember the exact string when linking it from any other page.... Argh... I'm sorry for vanishing without explanation a few months ago. I was becoming more and more conscious of how bad my Welsh really is; I was especially reminded of this by reading someone on maes-e saying about how he thought it was a shame that there are so many learners and so few fluent speakers on Wicipedia. So I thought I'd leave until my Welsh was a bit better, or at least until I was nearer to finishing Catchphrase. I've been dropping in now and again to see how things are going meanwhile, though, and I've recently been having second thoughts about my absence. I miss the challenge of writing Welsh to this level, even the simple level that I can manage, and the feedback I get from people correcting me was really useful when I was first learning. Version 1.5Golygu

Oh no! It looks like we've been 1.5'ed... What I mean is that the "new improved" software as recently implemented at en:, de:, and es: is now being used here... and it means my display (the left-hand panel) is now bugg(er)ed, just like in English, etc. (I use Opera for my browser).

You will notice, for one thing, that we now have "Show changes" (in English) at the bottom of the edit box. Is that a real improvement> I'd be glad if anyone here can explain what the pros (if any) of these changes are about, as at en:wikipedia questions from severely-non-techie people like me are usually ignored.

Go on Jac, tell us what you really think! 1.5's not too bad, once they iron out the inevitable bugs. Most of the benefits are underlying and affect how efficiently the database gets updated, but from our point of view one benefit is that it's now possible to have accented characters in article names, which it wasn't before. I don't claim to understand everything that's going on even though I do lurk on the techies' mailing list! I've fixed the "Show changes" bug -- the problem is that with new versions of the software the developers keep introducing new messages and they don't tell us poor translators about them! The full list of messages can be found at Arbennig:Allmessages, and if you want to edit them I'll gladly make you an Admin (leave a note on my talk page). I did spot a report somewhere that claimed that 51% of our messages had been translated (before 1.5), but I think it looks like we've got more than that done - possibly they're counting the untranslated monobook.css and monobook.js entries, but I'm not going to touch those except very gingerly since there's the possibility of completely screwing up the 'pedia's layout! -- Arwel 3 Gorffennaf 2005 23:45 (UTC)

You can easily enough edit one of them, replacing the entire text with a redirect to the other page. The hard part is editing the article you're intending to keep, so as to insert any additional useful content from the article which you're intending to wipe. Llareggub 07:18, 2 Medi 2005 (UTC)

Wikipedia's sister site, wikisource.org, used to have just one big wiki for all languages, but has recently started splitting into language sections, (en.wikisource.org, de.wikisource.org and so on). The old site had a small but slowly growing library of public-domain Welsh texts, mostly uploaded and formatted by me (see them here), and now I'd like a cy.wikisource.org to be set up to house them.

If you agree, please go here and sign your name. I've put my name down for bureaucratship simply because they need at least one bureaucrat to go ahead; if anyone else would rather do it, please feel free to volunteer. Also, if you have a better idea for a name than wicitestun, please say here or there.

Once that's done, if anyone has access to texts to contribute (especially from the mediaeval bards) please do.

Dear Wikipedians,

I need your help to look at date formats for your language. I created a large list of formats here. Please take a look and fix any mistakes or add any new formats. This will help interwiki bot to match en:April 1, fr:1 avril, ru:1 апреля, zh:4月1日, and all other sites together.

What's needed: Look here at every format for your language, fix any mistakes, note any exceptions (some languages have 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc naming schemas, or year 1 is written as '1 (year)' unlike all other years).

Also, I would like to receive a bot status on your site for my bot User:YurikBot. It will be mostly involved in interwikies.
